On Saturday 7th March 2009, a reception was held in honour of Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V by the Lord Provost, Councillor Robert Winter at Glasgow’s City Chambers. This reception was attended by numerous politicians and local dignitaries.
In his welcoming speech, the Lord Provost welcomed Huzoor to Glasgow and also recognised the contribution made by the local Ahmadiyya community, by mentioning:
"I am delighted to welcome you all. I realise that the presence of Hadhrat Mirza Masroor
Ahmad in this city makes this occasion very special... Local Ahmadis are extremely
valued and respected in Glasgow. We celebrate your commitment to peaceful dialogue."
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad used his speech to address a number of issues facing the world today including the global financial crisis and misconceptions regarding Islam in the West.
Speaking of the global financial crisis, Huzoor mentioned that an economic downturn could only be arrested through the development of a just system of governance and that for fairness and equity to prevail it was necessary that mankind turn towards God Almighty. He said:
"Peace depends on justice, and economic progressdepends on peace. This will only happen when man recognises his Creator. And only thenwill the rights of God’s Creation be discharged."
The event also included speeches delivered by a number of local politicians and dignitaries.
